Why offshore turbine interiors are uniquely vulnerable to biological contamination

The conditions inside an offshore wind turbine are a direct consequence of the engineering, the location, and structures designed to last 25 years in some of the harshest marine environments on earth.

A sealed environment with a persistent moisture problem

The tower interior is a long, confined column of air. The nacelle and hub are essentially sealed boxes. When warm, moisture-laden marine air meets cooler internal surfaces, condensation forms. This cycle is continuous and relentless.

When surfaces are contaminated with oil, grease, salt deposits, or organic material, they retain moisture regardless of ambient humidity. These microclimates are where biological colonisation begins.

Distinct environments, distinct challenges

The internal spaces are protected primarily by coating systems and dehumidification. The corrosive environment is classified as CX (Extreme) under ISO 12944. Signs of coating failure typically appear around year 5–6, against a design lifetime of 25+ years.

Mould and biofilm on coated surfaces trap moisture against the protective layer. Cleaning — specifically, removing biological contamination — is a direct contributor to the long-term corrosion protection strategy.

The offshore-specific accelerant

Salt is the factor that separates offshore from onshore. When salt absorbs humidity, it dramatically accelerates corrosion and oxidation rates. Salt-contaminated surfaces retain moisture. Moisture supports microbial colonisation. The cycle is self-reinforcing and accelerating.

The cleaning product is part of the protection system

A product that is too aggressive can damage the very protective layers that the turbine depends on. A product that ignores biological contamination leaves the underlying problem untreated.

TurbineClean is formulated with these constraints in mind. Mildly alkaline to preserve coating integrity. Water-based and non-flammable for confined space safety. Dual antimicrobial system. Readily biodegradable. Every formulation choice maps to a documented requirement.
